About the village

Kudan (कूदन) is a village and Gram Panchayat in Sikar district, Rajasthan, about 17–21 km from Sikar city by road, in the heart of the Shekhawati region. Its post office is Koodan (PIN 332031), and seven nearby villages are served through it.

Kudan is best known for the Kudan Golikand of 25 April 1935, a turning point of the Shekhawati farmers’ movement against unjust land revenue, which was raised in the British House of Commons and is taught in Rajasthan’s school textbooks today.

The village has a strong tradition of service in the Army, paramilitary and police, and a high literacy rate (81.7% in Census 2011, against 66.1% for Rajasthan). Agriculture is the main occupation, with about half of the land irrigated.

History

In the 1930s Kudan stood at the centre of the Shekhawati farmers’ struggle against the heavy rents, lag (cesses) and begar (forced labour) imposed by the Sikar thikana.

Kudan Golikand, 25 April 1935

When the thikana’s revenue party came to Kudan to collect rent at the raised rate, farmers from about 21 villages gathered. Some village elders agreed to pay, but Dhapi Dadi, who had come to water her buffalo, challenged them and the crowd rejected the settlement.

At Sukhani Johri, south of the village, Captain A.W.T. Webb ordered the crowd to disperse and then ordered firing. Four farmers are usually named as martyrs: Chetram, Tikuram and Tulchharam of Gothra Bhookran and Asharam Pilania of Ajeetpura. Many more were injured, and over a hundred were arrested and held at Devgarh fort.

On 26 May 1935 “Sikar Day” was observed across India, and on 3 June 1935 the firing was raised in the British House of Commons. By the end of 1935 most of the farmers’ demands had been accepted. The movement entered the RBSE Class 10 and Class 12 textbooks in 2017. A memorial at the site marks Shaheed Diwas every 25 April.
